A Common Male Problem - Gynecomastia
Enlarged breast in men is a common problem. It has been estimated that over a third of all men will experience this problem some time in their life. Excess breast tissue develops in one of two patterns, either as a firm button of tissue beneath the nipple or as a diffuse fatty change with poorly defined edges. Sometimes a combination of both patterns is present. The reason why some men develop gynecomastia is complex and there are numerous causes.
There are basically two male cosmetic surgery procedures available to accomplish breast reduction in men. The first procedure is ultrasonic liposuction alone. This method will remove excess tissue without skin excision in many patients. The treatment is now considered of choice for men with large breast.
In the second main method, which is the traditional method, enlarged breast can be reduced by incision and the removal of tissue. The incision extends out from the nipple at 3 and 9 oïclock. This method is often used in combination with a liposuction to improve the contour or removal of additional fat.
The operation is performed under general anesthetic which means the patient is asleep. The operation is one to two hours long and this kind of procedure typically takes place at outpatient surgery center, which means you can return home after the operation and you donït have to stay over the night at the hospital.
After surgery mild discomfort is often experienced and full recovery normally takes about one to two weeks. Most patients are back at work within a week. Swelling, tenderness and bruising around the operation area are common experiences after the operation. The results are permanent although weight gain may again cause breast enlargement problems.
There are risks with all kinds of male cosmetic surgery, and it is possible to divide them into two main groups. First those seen in all operations and second those unique to this operation. Swelling, infections, bruising, bleeding, scars and change of feeling sensation are common complications in all kinds of surgery. The main problems with this operation in particular are surface irregularity and a change in shape or position of the nipple.
Cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by health insurance policies. The surgical fee is usually $1500 to $3000 with additional costs for hospital care and anesthesia, not to mention extra personnel.
