Loss of hair for men is a common problem. Not too long ago, and in some cases still, men have tried to solve this in all kinds of more or less embarrassing ways. Is there anyone that thinks it looks good to grow your hair really long around the scalp, and then comb over long strands? Well the last decade a somewhat better trend has a emerged - shave it all off. But there are alternatives to it. Keep on reading.
A brilliant idea, but not too simple, the cosmetic male surgery hair transplant operation is done to replace hair, usually in men but sometimes also in women. It can recreate your hair pattern, but the new hair pattern will not be exactly the same as your hair was before it became thin. Let us explain the procedure.
There are several methods of hair transplantation surgery. One is called grafting, where hairs or groups of hair are replaced. The surgeon uses small plugs of hair called mini or macro grafts and usually 250 to 750 miniature plugs are inserted. Another method is to cut out the bald area and replace it with flaps of hair bearing skin. The surgeon actually moves skin with normal hair from the scalp to a new position.
Both these operations can be done using general anesthesia which means you are asleep, or under local anesthetic where you are awake. Discuss with your surgeon which anesthesia you prefer. These cosmetic procedures are usually outpatients operation and take about one to two hours and you can return to your home a few hours after the surgery.
Another method is scalp expansion where the surgeon gradually expands the hair-bearing scalp with a saline-filled balloon causing more skin with hair to grow. This basically means walking around with an expanding bubble on your head. When the additional skin patch is large enough the balloon is taken out, and the skin is used to cover the areas in need.
All surgical procedures are associated with risks. There are general risks, which refers to ones that are seen in all kinds of operations and there are specific risks unique to the specific operation in question. General risks are for example infections, bleeding, swelling, change in sensation and scars. Specific risks with hair transplantation operations are scars that can stretch, the need for multiple operations, poor results and change in sensation.
The recovery period after cosmetic male surgery like this is usually between one to two weeks. Patients are back to work after one or two days after a hair graft operation and after a week when a so called flap procedure has been carried through. The recovery after scalp expansion is much longer.
Results after hair transplantation are usually permanent, but the result can depend on your type of skin and hair pattern. Your hair pattern may continue to change throughout your life.
