The Modern Man vs Male Cosmetic Surgery
Cosmetic surgery has since long ceased to be taboo. For women that is. For decades self improvement through medical interference has been reserved for Eve and her girlfriends. But no more – Adam has looked at gender equality from another point of view.
Today more men than ever choose to undergo male cosmetic surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), hundreds of thousands of men experienced cosmetic surgery in 2006. Men today have an increased awareness of cosmetic surgery and men make more decision in health care issues. A few years ago almost all decisions about health care were made by women, but times have changed. Men now take increasing responsibility for their own choices in health care and one aspect of this is the growth in male cosmetic surgery.
Another reason for the increased interest of male cosmetic surgery could be intense competition in the business world. There is often an understanding that an older person is less up to date and not as competent compared to younger colleges, and in an effort to remain a young appearance many men have turned to male cosmetic surgery.
Male cosmetic surgery uses similar procedures as in female cosmetic surgery. There are however some differences when it comes to the structure of a man’s body. For example, men’s skin is thicker and the facial area contains hair. This equals a greater supply of blood. Good blood supply is crucial for fast and proper healing, but there is also a greater risk of bleeding. The anatomic differences exist at a finer level than one might first think of. This requires the surgeon to take into account both the gross and obvious differences in body shape and the anatomic differences in tissue levels, which both could affect the choice of surgical technique.
Some problems and operations are specific for men and these include gynecomastia (large breast), penis surgery and hair transplantation. The most common procedures are, however, modification of standard cosmetic operations. Among the most sought procedures are rhinoplasty, eyelidplasty and liposuction of the flanks and abdomen.
